Overdraft fees at banks continue to remain high despite Federal Reserve rules that require banks to get permission from customers to charge overdraft fees on debit card transactions. And although some banks have changed the order in which they process overdraft payments from checking accounts, most continued to pay the largest transactions first, according to a recent Consumer Federation of America (CFA) report.

The 2011 programs have been released! TaxWorks and 1040Works are available right now.

Clients that requested the download option began installing their software Monday, November 14th. CD shipments began Thursday, November 17th.

Sterling has started the day strongly against the Euro trading above 1.18 whilst remaining within tight ranges against a strong USD. The pound has taken full advantage of strong pressure on the Euro and demand for UK government bonds, by investors seeking refuge from Europe. The Federal Open Market Committee meets this week, with an announcement due Wednesday Jan. 27 at approximately 2:15 p.m. EST. While no rate change is in the cards, the Fed will still be in the news this week for a couple of reasons.

First, of course, is the aforementioned FOMC meeting and any adjustments to the accompanying statement. The focus is always on whether the phrase “for an extended period” will remain, an indication of how long the Fed expects to hold off on raising interest rates. So while I expect that phrase to remain, it’s the phrase right before it “exceptionally low levels of the federal funds rate” that is most subject to tweaking.
